Ocean City and Cape May - A Tale of 2 Cities

If your looking for a getaway from Washington, DC, be sure to take a trip into Maryland. In May, I toke a roadtrip to explore some the lesser explored parts of Maryland and New Jersey - exploring the cities of Ocean City and Cape May. This route requires a commitment of driving out to the lesser known areas of the region but it is definetly a road trip that you should take if you are around the DC/Maryland region. Plan at least 3 days for trip from DC to Ocean City, Cape May and Assateague Island. From DC, rent a car/take your car and drive towards Bay Bridge, heading towards the Maryland coast cities of Rehoboth Beach and Ocean City. Sometimes you just need to get out of the city for a couple of days and this road trip offers exactly that opportunity.

1. Ocean City

Ocean City is about a 3 hour drive from DC and is known for its long boardwalk, amusement park and beaches. It is a great summertime destination in Maryland to get away from the city. Try the local seafood here and you won’t be disappointed. Be sure try some of the crepe and sweet desserts as you walk through board walk. Near the boardwalk, there is an area where you feel the waves coming from the North Atlantic Ocean, so be sure to explore some of the unexplored areas of the boardwalk, including tasting crepes on the boardwalk and trying churrios at some of the stands.

This a great place to go for a weekend getaway from the city and to relax in a city with an electric mix of bars and restaurants along both sides as you head into the city. Be sure to try the tuna tartare and fish tacos at the local restaurants.

2. Ferry Ride

From Ocean City, drive towards the ferry terminal at Lewes to cross over to New Jersey and explore the small town of Cape May.The ferry ride from Lewes to Cape May is an enjoyable 75 minutes and you pass by a small lighthouse and if you are lucky, you might be able to see some wildlife along the way as well. On my ferry ride, I saw many seagulls fly on top in a clock-wise formation as the ferry passed by. Bask yourself in sunshine as you lay on the rooftop of the ship.

3. Cape May

Cape May is often overlooked as a destination to visit and explore when compared Ocean City but it is actually easily accessible by the Cape-Lewis Ferry located in Lewes, Maryland, which makes it a great destination to explore in a roadtrip along with Ocean City. Immediately when you land in the harbour in Cape May, you can the notice a difference in scenery with well-matriculated lawns, peaceful ocean views and a tranquil atmosphere. Head over to Cape May Lighthouse, the famous lighthouse which is still in operation to this day. On a clear summer day, you see whales swimming in the distance along the beach.

Also head over to the town square, which as distinct boutique shops with not only decadent deserts but also and very couture feeling. The rustic feel of the town infuses with the modern element of the city to form a cohesive identity. One of the cafes had a nice selection of ice teas, desserts and small delicacies, perfect for a hot summer day. If you like biking, you'll also be glad to know that Cape May is very bike friendly and is reminiscent of a small town. The town square also has a nice collection of local and modern fashion.

4. Assatague Island

This island is known for its wild horses and best times to see them in their natural habitat is from May -September. I saw horses in the distance as well as roamed the white, pristine beaches of the island. Be sure to travel to the visitor centre to explore the best places to see the horses and walk the various trails. However, be aware of mosquitoes that are large and rampant on the island. Also, be sure to look into the binoculars, as you might see groups of horses nearby in the distance, as I did. It is really spectacular to see horses in their natural environment, and Assatague Island is a great place to see them. Consider Assatague Island fora rustic camping getaway from the city, nestled close enough to Ocean city to explore restaurants, but far enough to feel like you are out in the wilderness.
